Yoga Therapy

Yoga for the Individual

Yoga therapy uses the practices and wisdom of yoga to empower clients to manage their own health and wellbeing. Yoga therapy adapts the tools of yoga – asana/postures, restorative yoga, pranayama/breathing, relaxation techniques, lifestyle guidance and meditation – to the individual. Yoga therapy is an ongoing path of practice that nourishes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
One of the unique features of yoga therapy is that it is a very holistic and individualised approach. This is not a “one practice suits all” approach. Yoga therapy works with the individual person as a whole – not only with conditions. Yoga therapy rests on the principles and practices of deep listening, respect, empowerment and honouring of the wholeness of every human being. In collaboration with the client, each client is given a short and individualised practice program to help clients take the next steps towards wellbeing.

Why have yoga therapy sessions?

An individual may choose to have yoga therapy sessions to address specific health needs, to establish or reinvigorate a personal home practice or to find deeper meaning and direction in their home practice. Yoga therapy can effectively address a wide range of conditions or issues including but not limited to:
– mental and emotional wellbeing: such as anxiety, depression, overcoming stress, fostering self-worth
– women’s health: such as painful menstruation, endometriosis, pelvic health, pregnancy and birth preparation
– resolving past trauma
– spiritual growth: fostering self-love and affirming deepest life meaning and life purpose
– postural improvement: integrating the body as a whole into functional posture and movement
– back health
– joint issues
Sometimes a general group yoga class becomes inappropriate for those with specific health needs. One to one sessions provide a highly individualised personal program to help you reach your wellbeing goals.

About Yoga Therapy Sessions.

The yoga therapist aims to develop a specific home practice program to suit the needs of the client. Yoga therapy usually requires about 1-3 sessions, depending on the individual’s needs. In the first session, a thorough assessment is made to create a holistic picture of the individual’s needs and priorities. The first session is 1.5 hours long and will usually include a short practice for the client to take home. Subsequent sessions, usually 1 hour long, are made as the client needs them. The main committment needed from the yoga therapy client is a willingness to do some home practice. This can be as little as 10 minutes a day. Regular short practices are more effective than a longer once a week practice. The effects of yoga are greatly enhanced with regular practice of 3 – 5 times a week.
