What is mentoring?

Mentoring offers deep listening, meaningful conversation and experienced guidance, to help the mentoree reach their full potential in their role as a yoga teacher. Mentoring is an important part of the professional development of a yoga teacher. Mentoring nourishes the mentoree’s deepest path in the profound and soulful journey of teaching yoga.

Specifically, a mentor assists the mentoree to:

  • Further extend their skills and abilities as a yoga teacher

  • Further develop their self-practice, the foundation of yoga teaching

  • Maintain self-care and deepen their yogic lifestyle

  • Further their education and training

  • Develop the business and practical skills of being a yoga teacher

  • Teach in a way that is unique and true to themselves

Mentoring is offered individually or in small groups, facilitated by Anahata, or why not learn peer mentoring? See below for details.

Group Mentoring: A facilitated 1.75 hour session in small groups of three, with each participant having half an hour to work through a current issue. Receive mentoring, support and insight from Anahata and from the others in the group. A great way to receive personalised mentoring, to create a community of support at an affordable price. You can choose two trusted yoga teacher colleagues to form your group, or register your interest and I can form a group for you. Various times are available. These group sessions are also available by Skype.

Why have a mentor?

Mentoring the yoga teacher is very important during the first one or two years or so of teaching yoga, as there is a lot of learning that happens in the first stage of teaching yoga. New teachers are often not well supported once their teacher training is complete. Further down the track, mentoring may be used at different stages of growth throughout a yoga teacher’s span of teaching. Anahata is deeply respectful of the different yoga paths – and will help you find the path that is right for you.

Some examples of why someone may seek a mentor include:

  • A new teacher may need guidance to fill in any gaps in their teaching

  • An experienced teacher wants to further their training and is not sure what direction to go in

  • A teacher wants to reinvigorate their home practice

  • A teacher wants to develop new areas of their yoga teaching such as yoga philosophy, sound work, pranayama or meditation into their teaching

  • An experienced teacher wants to clarify his/her personal unique approach to teaching

  • A teacher wants to learn business skills to support themselves more effectively with their yoga teaching

Testimonial

Every yoga teacher should have at least one mentor. After completing my teacher training, I confidently went out to share my love and knowledge of yoga. But it wasn’t until I started teaching and seeing students with so many different bodies and their individual restrictions that you develop this long list of questions and concerns that no teacher training can comprehensively cover. This type of knowledge comes only from experience, over years and years of teaching, from a very experienced teacher. I felt like I’d struck gold when I discovered Anahata Giri was offering mentoring sessions. With decades of being a yoga practitioner and a dedicated teacher, she has vast knowledge to share in general yoga, prenatal, sound practices, chanting, meditation & pranayama and more. Having the mentoring sessions allows me to continue to develop my skills and explore new ways to be an effective teacher. Anahata is open and easy going, offering a safe and confidential space to share ideas, concerns, challenges, and experiences and giving practical tools to firstly apply to my own practice and then share with students. Highly recommended!”

Learn the Skills of Peer Mentoring – for Yoga/Movement Teachers
Theme: Maps for Movement: What maps do you use in your yoga teaching?

One Day Workshop with Anahata Giri

Many yoga teachers work alone, without much feedback and often without much connection to a community of yoga teachers. In isolation, yoga teachers can start to doubt their direction, worth, purpose and focus. Social media can compound feelings of inadequacy and overwhelm. Traditionally, yoga was conveyed in connection with other humans, in community. This mentoring workshop teaches the skills of peer mentoring so that yoga teachers can provide ongoing support to each other, whenever needed and free of ongoing cost.

Participants will be shown a step by step process for peer mentoring in triads. The mentoring circle process is based on embodied listening, self-inquiry and positive ways to give feedback for growth and inspiration. Participants will learn through participating in the peer mentoring circle process so it can be taken away and put into practice after the training.

Each workshop will have a theme. The next theme is Maps for Movement: What maps do you use in your yoga teaching? Being clear on the maps you use brings clarity of intention, passion, insight, direction and deep purpose to your practice and teaching. You can read my blog piece for some ideas. It will be a juicy exploration!

We will use activities such as: stream of consciousness writing, free movement, meditation and embodied listening in pairs to playfully explore the maps we love using - and the maps we would like to use more often.

To form the triads: you can invite two other yoga teacher colleagues or friends that you would like to work with or come along on your own and form a triad with other yogis at the workshop.
